Accident Report

July 27, 2026, three people sustained injuries due to a work truck versus 18-wheeler accident at 1:13 p.m. on Highway 3.

According to preliminary details about the crash, it happened at the intersection of IA-3 and W Avenue northwest of Oelwein.

Reports say that the incident happened as an 18-wheeler was going westbound through the intersection. Officials say, and dashcam video appears to show, that a Dodge truck pulling a trailer did not stop at a stop sign, entering the path of the 18-wheeler. As a result, the vehicles collided.

Due to the crash, both truck drivers and a passenger from the Dodge reportedly had injuries. Their conditions weren’t specified. Additional details about the crash are unavailable at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

From the video published in the news, it seems clear as day that the Dodge truck just blew through the stop sign without any sign of slowing down or stopping. Frankly, that is usually the result of distracted driving. I expect just about every accident reconstruction I’m a part of to dig into cellphone records first thing, so hopefully authorities have done the same here.

That said, video is only one piece of the puzzle, and it can’t really explain why a crash happened on its own. Just as a hypothetical, could it be that the Dodge truck’s brakes failed? Maybe the vehicle has some kind of defect. Or, maybe this is a company vehicle that the driver’s employer isn’t properly maintaining, resulting in a catastrophic maintenance-related failure. That would require careful inspections of the truck to properly diagnose or otherwise rule out. Is that something authorities have done? Do they even have the right tools for that sort of investigation?
