How Did This Accident Occur?
Two trucks colliding head-on this early in the morning raises a lot of red flags for fatigue. There are certainly many possibilities that need to be ruled out, as well. Anything from mechanical issues to a medical emergency to an animal in the road could lead to a crash. Securing clear evidence early on can help tell the story when the victims aren’t around to speak for themselves.
To that end, my hope is that authorities can look into these drivers’ hours of service logs and their working conditions. Something that doesn’t get enough attention is how many employers overwork their drivers and pressure them into working unreasonable hours. Any experienced trucker can attest to the fact that some companies out there care more about wheels on the road than keeping their drivers and others around them safe. This results in situations where drivers who are afraid of losing their jobs work long hours and skip crucial rest breaks to the point they can’t stay awake on the road. That’s when devastating crashes like this can happen.
To be clear, that’s just one possibility that still needs to be confirmed or ruled out. My concern is that I see a lot of police investigations begin and end at the crash scene. For the victims’ families to get the full story, though, there will likely have to be investigations behind the scenes for possible working conditions that may have contributed to this crash. The sooner these steps are taken, the more evidence can be preserved.
