Accident Report
April 2, 2026, Harold Byrd and one other were injured following an alleged drunk driver accident at around 12:50 a.m. along Loop 8.
It appears that the crash took place along northbound Sam Houston Tollway in the area of Corporate Centre Drive, north of Clay Road.
According to officials, 39-year-old Harold Byrd was in a Chevy Malibu going along the beltway. A BMW was going the same direction when it reportedly crashed with the Malibu. Due to this, Harold Byrd was seriously injured. The BMW driver had possible injuries.
Authorities allege that the BMW driver was under the influence of alcohol. They recommended a charge for intoxication assault.
How Did This Accident Occur?
If the allegations here are true, then it would seem alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash. Even in situations where there could be other factors at play, my experience is that alcohol almost always proves to be the most significant causal factor. That’s especially true if evidence shows the driver was coming from a local bar after being unlawfully over-served.
Around this time of day, a lot of drunk driving accidents involve not just negligent drunk drivers but also law-breaking alcohol providers who over-serve those drivers and send them out onto the roads. This is important not just in finding out how an individual drunk driving crash might occur but also determining how so many of them happen in our state. It’s often a combination of irresponsible drivers willing to get behind the wheel drunk and negligent alcohol providers willing to serve those folks to the point they’re a danger to themselves and others.
Maybe that isn’t what happened here, but it would be irresponsible of investigators not to at least consider that possibility. If there’s going to be accountability for a drunk driving crash, that needs to involve all parties whose actions contributed to the crash, whether they were behind the wheel or not. Are those steps being taken here?
Let me know in the comments if you agree that investigators should also consider where alleged drunk drivers may have been drinking.
