According to authorities, 27-year-old Dawson Martinez was traveling in a northwest bound Toyota Corolla in the southeast bound exit from I-37 to U.S. Highway 181 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, due to the wrong-way situation, a head-on collision occurred between the Corolla and a southeast bound Ford Edge occupied by a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman.
Martinez reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. The two people from the Edge suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Most people will make assumptions about what led to a vehicle to be heading the wrong direction on an exit ramp in the dark hours of the early morning. I, however, am not about to jump to conclusions. I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years. I’ve learned that it is prudent to wait until the investigation is complete and it’s findings have bee made public. After all, there is still so very little that we actually know about this wreck.
Could driver error have played a role? Of course. But what if the Corolla was heading in the wrong direction due to something like badly designed roads or intersections, unclear signage, or a faulty GPS that gave bad directions? I’m not insinuating that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that these types of causes, while not super likely, are not outside of the realm of possibilities.
Hopefully, the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—are putting in the time and effort necessary to get to the bottom of it. Every accident investigation, after all, deserves meticulous and thorough attention to detail.
