How Did This Accident Occur?
A failure to yield at a traffic light is almost always the result of a driver simply not paying enough attention to cross traffic. That could mean something more serious, such as cellphone use or drunk driving. Or, it may have simply been impatience. But just because those factors are more common doesn’t make them the only ones worth considering.
Just as a hypothetical, what if the light malfunctioned? If the driver making the turn saw a green arrow or otherwise had reason to believe it was safe to make the turn, could it be the traffic signal had a defect or glitch of some kind? Likely or not, it can happen, and that’s why folks should avoid jumping to conclusions. I’ve yet to see a situation where anything proved more effective than letting the evidence speak for itself. So whether it’s authorities or independent investigators, someone needs to work to gather all of that evidence.
