How Did This Accident Occur?

This intersection appears to have a clearly marked crosswalk with no lights or stop signs. That generally means it’s up to the people crossing through to be aware of their surroundings. This could be a situation where a driver was being impatient trying to make good time on their route, or maybe the driver was on their phone. Or, perhaps the pedestrian was the one on their phone, or maybe they ran across the street suddenly while the truck was already in the process of turning. There is no magic equation that says one party or the other is automatically to blame. It’s up to the evidence to show exactly what series of events led to the collision.

To that end, have authorities looked for video footage of this accident? Cameras are everywhere in New York, and these days, tons of businesses and drivers have cameras on their vehicles and on storefronts for security. There could be multiple angles of the moments preceding and during the collision which may clearly show what went wrong. That evidence is time-sensitive, though, so it’s important investigators work to secure it early on. If authorities aren’t doing that, it may take more thorough independent investigations to step in and make sure nothing slips through the cracks.
