How Did This Accident Occur?
There is still very little that the public knows, as far as how this accident occurred. I’d caution people from passing judgement too quickly; much better to wait until the investigation is complete and the details are made known. After all, any number of things could have played a role in the collision.
I’ve analyzed hundreds of pedestrian-involved accidents over the years; several questions come to mind in this case. The accident happened early in the morning. Was there a sufficient amount of road lighting in the area? Was that lighting functioning at the time of the incident? Is there an insufficient amount of pedestrian infrastructure in the area? What about the vehicle that struck the pedestrian? Did it have working headlights? Were there safety systems in the vehicle—like pedestrian detection—that malfunctioned? And what about the driver? Were they distracted, fatigued, or impaired?
Many, if not all of these questions will be answered by any investigation worth its salt. If the investigation done by authorities does leave blanks, though, then perhaps a third party investigation should be considered. After all, it’s the answers to these questions that will put the blame for this accident where it belongs, not just where it is convenient.
