Accident Report
May 23, 2025, Zachary Thomas was injured due to a motorcycle versus car accident shortly before 10:30 p.m. on Preston Road (S.H. 289).
According to authorities, 24-year-old Zachary Thomas was traveling on a southeast bound Yamaha motorcycle on Preston Road in the vicinity northwest of the Hedgcoxe Road intersection when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the motorcycle failed to appropriately control its speed. It was consequently involved in a collision with the rear-end of a southwest bound Honda CR-V. Thomas reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Over the three decades in which I have been in this line of work I have seen many accidents similar to this one. I’m not going to argue against the most likely cause being either driver error or reckless driving. However, I would be remiss if I did not mention that sometimes, the less likely reasons end up actually being behind accidents like this one, no matter how things appear on the surface.
I hope that investigators are taking the time necessary to rule out the less plausible causes for this rear-end accident. One such cause might be brake malfunction. If investigators take the step to get the motorcycle an in-depth vehicle inspection, it could be unearthed that the brakes were not working at the time of the accident, which was the ultimate cause of the collision. Perhaps the motorcycle did not control its speed because it could not.
It should be mentioned that most vehicle inspections like this are not done routinely; it might take a specific request in order to make sure that it does not get skipped. Let me know in the comments whether or not you agree, but I think it is worth the time and effort necessary to make sure that the investigation leads to conclusive answers, not blanket statements.
