On Monday afternoon, July 7, 2025, a serious crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and First Avenue in Petersburg, North Dakota. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, a 1999 Freightliner pulling a grain trailer was traveling north on Highway 32 and reportedly crossing Highway 2 when a 2023 Hyundai Tucson struck the right side of the trailer. The Freightliner came to rest in the west ditch, while the Hyundai ended up in the east ditch of First Avenue. The passenger in the Hyundai, a 66-year-old woman, was seriously injured. Both occupants of the Hyundai and the Freightliner driver were reportedly wearing seat belts.
A crash like this raises serious questions about the semi’s actions. In this case, I immediately have questions about the timing of the truck crossing the highway.
Was the Semi Crossing Safely?
Whenever a semi-truck crosses a major highway, it’s essential that the driver confirm there is ample time and space to do so without interfering with oncoming traffic. Investigators will need to determine if the truck driver misjudged the distance or speed of the Hyundai or if other factors, like distraction or fatigue, may have played a role.
Key Evidence That Should Be Examined
A thorough investigation will likely include measurements of the intersection layout, skid marks, and the final resting positions of the vehicles. Investigators may also examine the Freightliner’s Engine Control Module (ECM) to determine its speed and braking behavior leading up to the collision. Additionally, statements from the drivers and any nearby witnesses will be essential to understanding what happened.
Why Answering These Questions Requires Thorough Investigation
When someone is seriously injured in a crash involving a semi-truck, it’s critical to fully understand what caused the collision. In my experience, investigating these types of incidents helps establish whether the commercial driver acted appropriately and whether any additional factors contributed to the crash. A careful review of the facts is essential to ensure accountability is assigned where appropriate.
