Local officials in Nevada reported that one person was hospitalized and several others sustained minor injuries following a five-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 eastbound near Patrick early Wednesday morning. According to police, the crash occurred around 4:45 a.m. when a 1984 International box truck allegedly failed to slow for traffic ahead and struck the rear of a Toyota Tacoma. The impact caused a chain reaction that involved three additional vehicles. The Tacoma driver was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Early-morning crashes often involve fatigue-related factors, particularly if the driver had been operating overnight or for extended hours. The driver’s work history, electronic logging device (ELD) records, and hours-of-service compliance will help determine whether rest requirements were followed.

Examining Vehicle Condition and Mechanical Factors

Authorities will inspect the box truck’s braking system, tires, and load condition to ensure it was operating safely at the time of the crash. Older commercial vehicles, like the 1984 model involved here, require consistent maintenance to perform effectively under highway conditions. Investigators will review inspection and maintenance records to confirm that all components met safety standards.

If the truck was carrying a load, investigators will also examine whether weight distribution affected stopping distance or braking performance. A poorly balanced or overweight vehicle can significantly increase stopping time in congested traffic.
