Authorities near Comfort, Texas reported that a woman and two young boys were killed Monday when a tractor-trailer allegedly struck a pickup truck that had stopped in the right lane of Interstate 10 just south of Comfort. According to local officials, the three people who died were passengers in a 2013 GMC Sierra. Two other occupants, including a child, were taken to San Antonio hospitals with injuries. The tractor-trailer driver was not hurt. The crash remains under investigation.

Collisions involving stationary or slow-moving vehicles on interstates often come down to questions of driver attention, reaction time, and following distance. Investigators will now focus on understanding why the tractor-trailer was unable to avoid the stopped pickup and whether its speed or position in the lane contributed to the outcome.

What Investigators Will Work to Determine

Investigators will review Engine Control Module (ECM) data from the tractor-trailer to establish its speed, throttle position, and braking input before the crash. This information can reveal whether the driver saw the stopped vehicle in time to react or whether the collision occurred without any braking effort.

Authorities will also examine whether the pickup truck had functioning lights or hazard signals that could have alerted approaching drivers. While the reason it stopped in the travel lane remains unknown, commercial vehicle drivers are still expected to maintain constant awareness and be prepared to react to unexpected obstacles.

Examining Driver Conduct and Vehicle Condition

The truck driver’s work history, hours-of-service compliance, and recent rest periods will be reviewed to determine whether fatigue or distraction played a role. Investigators may also check for phone or communication device activity in the moments leading up to the crash.

Mechanical inspection of the tractor-trailer will confirm whether the braking system, tires, and lighting were in good working order. A properly maintained braking system is essential to stopping large commercial vehicles in time to avoid stationary hazards. Maintenance logs and inspection reports from the trucking company will provide important context for these findings.

What Evidence Should Be Reviewed?

In addition to ECM data, investigators will analyze roadway evidence such as skid marks, vehicle debris, and final resting positions. This helps reconstruct the sequence of impacts and determine whether the truck attempted to swerve or brake before striking the pickup. Witness statements or traffic camera footage could provide further context.

Why Understanding Driver Awareness Is Critical

When a tractor-trailer collides with a stopped vehicle on a major highway, investigators must determine whether the driver had sufficient time and visibility to respond. Even at highway speeds, maintaining proper attention and spacing is crucial to avoiding catastrophic crashes. A complete investigation will help explain how and why this accident happened.
