Authorities reported that two people from Lamesa died in a three-vehicle crash west of Snyder on Monday night. The collision occurred around 9 p.m. on US Highway 180 near County Road 264. Investigators say a pickup truck was following a semi-truck when another semi, traveling east, allegedly crossed the centerline and collided head-on with both vehicles. The pickup’s driver and passenger, Orlando Tello, 32, and Silvia Lemon, 59, died at the scene. The semi-truck driver who crossed into oncoming traffic, along with a passenger, suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the first semi was not hurt.
When a semi-truck allegedly crosses into the wrong lane, investigators have to sort through several possible explanations. Mechanical problems, fatigue, distraction, or sudden evasive maneuvers are all potential factors that could lead to a vehicle drifting out of its lane.
Could Fatigue or Distraction Be Involved?
This crash happened late in the evening, a time when fatigue often plays a role in truck collisions. Investigators may review the semi driver’s logbooks, hours-of-service records, and work schedule to confirm compliance with federal rest requirements. They may also examine phone records or in-cab camera footage, if available, to see whether distraction contributed. Eyewitness accounts of how the truck was moving in the moments before impact will also be critical.
Were There Mechanical Problems?
A sudden equipment failure, such as a steering or brake malfunction, could explain why the semi drifted across the centerline. The truck will likely undergo a full inspection, including its steering system, tires, and braking components. Investigators will also review maintenance records and prior inspection logs to determine whether any known problems had been reported or left unaddressed.
Evidence Investigators Should Collect
Engine Control Module (ECM) data from the semi-truck may show whether the driver attempted to brake, steer, or accelerate in the seconds before the collision. Physical evidence like skid marks, vehicle damage, and debris scatter will help reconstruct the sequence of events. Scene photographs and, if available, dash cam or surveillance footage could further clarify why the semi left its lane.
Why a Thorough Investigation Matters
With two lives lost and others left seriously hurt, the stakes in this case are high. Determining whether fatigue, distraction, or a mechanical defect caused the semi to cross into oncoming traffic is essential. Only a complete investigation can provide the answers needed for accountability and understanding.
