Authorities confirmed that a chain-reaction crash involving two semi-trucks and six passenger vehicles left 17 people hospitalized on I-20 in Smith County. The wreck happened in the westbound lanes, shutting down traffic as emergency crews responded. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office said a total of 19 people were involved, with 17 transported to area hospitals with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

With this many vehicles involved and two semi-trucks at the center of the crash, investigators will need to carefully evaluate whether driver fatigue, distraction, or mechanical failure played a role.

Could Fatigue or Distraction Have Played a Role?

The size and stopping distance of semi-trucks make them especially vulnerable in congested traffic conditions. Investigators will want to examine whether either truck driver was fatigued from long hours behind the wheel or momentarily distracted in the moments leading up to the collision. Hours-of-service records, driver logbooks, and any in-cab cameras could provide insight into whether rest requirements were followed. Witness testimony may also help confirm whether either truck braked late or drifted from its lane before impact.

Were Mechanical Problems a Factor?

When two large commercial vehicles are involved in a crash that affects so many others, investigators will also want to rule out potential equipment failures. Brake system performance, tire condition, and load security all play critical roles in whether a truck can stop safely in heavy traffic. A full inspection of both semis, along with a review of maintenance records, will be needed to confirm whether the trucks were roadworthy.

What Evidence Should Be Collected?

The most important evidence will include Engine Control Module (ECM) data from both trucks, which can show speed, throttle position, and braking in the moments before the crash. Physical scene evidence will help reconstruct how the pileup happened. Surveillance cameras along the interstate, as well as dashcam footage from passenger vehicles, may also provide critical angles to establish the chain of events.

The Importance of a Thorough Investigation

With 17 people in the hospital and two semi-trucks directly involved, this is far more than a routine traffic accident. A complete investigation into driver attention and vehicle condition will be essential to understanding what caused this pileup.
