A 58-year-old Bedford man was killed Thursday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a tractor-trailer in Manchester. Police say the crash happened around 4 p.m. in the area of 344 East Industrial Park Drive. The motorcyclist allegedly struck the truck as it was making a right turn onto East Industrial Park Drive. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released. The crash remains under investigation.
When I see a crash between a tractor-trailer and a motorcycle, the imbalance of risk is always the first thing to come to my mind. Even a relatively low-speed collision can be fatal when a rider meets the mass of a commercial truck. That’s why it’s so important for investigators to understand exactly how this turn was made and whether it was executed safely.
Was the Tractor-Trailer’s Turn Performed Safely?
Large trucks make wide right turns, and drivers are required to ensure that adjacent lanes are clear before initiating the maneuver. Investigators will likely review whether the truck signaled properly, maintained its lane, and left enough room to account for nearby traffic. Witness statements or surveillance video from surrounding businesses may help provide important context.
Could Driver Distraction or Fatigue Have Been an Issue?
Another important angle is whether the truck driver saw the motorcyclist before turning. Blind spots on tractor-trailers can make motorcycles difficult to detect, but that does not relieve the driver of responsibility to check mirrors and maintain situational awareness. Investigators may need to look into whether distraction or fatigue limited the driver’s attention in those critical seconds.
What Types of Evidence Should Be Reviewed?
Engine Control Module (ECM) data from the tractor-trailer could reveal speed, throttle, and brake activity during the turn. Physical evidence such as skid marks, point of impact, and the final positions of the vehicles will also be important in reconstructing the crash. Dashcams from either the truck or nearby vehicles could be particularly helpful in determining whether the rider had the right of way when the truck began its maneuver.
Why a Thorough Investigation Is Critical
Accidents involving a commercial vehicle and a motorcycle usually result in serious injuries or death. In this case, a careful review of the driver’s actions, the truck’s mechanical condition, and the physical evidence at the scene will be essential in determining accountability. Ultimately, it is the best way to determine exactly what happened during this accident and why.
