How We Helped a Grieving Husband Find Closure After His Wife was Killed in a Tragic Trucking Accident

When Tim’s wife never returned home from a weekend trip, he knew something was wrong. But nothing could have prepared him for the knock on the door that would follow.

“Two police officers came to the door and started asking questions… we finally found out that there was an accident in which a truck, a semi had hit the back of my wife’s car… the car exploded and started on fire.”

His wife and her friend, who were both inside the car, were burned beyond recognition. The loss was sudden, shocking, and devastating.

The accident happened in Oklahoma. As Tim and his stepdaughter tried to make sense of what happened and navigate the out-of-state logistics like retrieving the body, managing funeral arrangements, Tim began researching law firms.

“He laid out some facts and then let us make the decision… and then he basically said, ‘I think you made the right decision,’ which helped us feel good that we did.”

Cory explained that while pursuing a lawsuit might produce a larger recovery, it would likely take years, possibly longer than Tim or his family were willing or able to wait.

“I’m 76 years old and I don’t need to wait until I’m 80 for this thing to finalize… not so bad for me, but for my stepdaughter, it was good to get her settled and not sitting there wondering what was going to happen.”

Finding Some Peace

The manner of his wife’s death left Tim with painful questions. But one of the small reliefs came when Cory shared that, based on the reconstruction and medical analysis, she and her friend likely died on impact, before the fire.

“That helped to settle some of the thoughts that you have about a car accident like that.”

Even after enduring the loss of both of his wives in his lifetime, Tim expressed how heavy this tragedy still felt. But he also recognized the strength it took to move forward. “It isn’t that it gets any easier… you just learn how to compartmentalize it.”
