With this being a 4-way stop, it’s possible this all comes down to who had the right-of-way. But it’s always important to make sure authorities aren’t being too hasty. Sometimes, there are extenuating circumstances they may have overlooked in their preliminary investigations.

For example, I recall a crash from a while back where a person was killed after a truck crashed into them at an intersection. The authorities initially came out and said the victim ran a stop sign. That’s all anyone knew for some time. Well, a friend of the firm worked accident reconstruction in the area, and he clued us in on details revealed in further investigations that the public never got to hear.

In short: there was no stop sign to run. Apparently, TxDOT had been doing construction at the crossing earlier in the day, and they removed the sign in the process. When they packed up and left for the day, though, they forgot to replace the sign. This left the intersection uncontrolled, and the victim had no way of knowing they were supposed to stop.

To be clear, I’m not trying to say that happened here. My point is it took more thorough investigations than the initial police investigations to tell what really happened, and that’s all too common. It’s possible more thorough investigations here would simply confirm what authorities already know. That alone can bring much needed peace of mind. Otherwise, investigations could reveal there’s more to this than initial public statements suggest. At the end of the day, the two victims killed in this crash aren’t around to tell their side of the story. Steps should be taken to ensure the evidence can speak on their behalf, whatever story that may ultimately tell.
