Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, it might surprise folks how often I get calls from families worried that authorities have mishandled their investigations. Sometimes, they get details that just don’t add up. Other times, authorities leave families in the dark, and they can’t even tell if authorities are still working to get answers. Ultimately, not every department treats accidents like this as a high priority, which can result in shoddy or incomplete investigations.
That’s one of the reasons independent accident reconstructionists are generally more reliable. Their priority is simple: get the evidence, and let the facts speak for themselves, one way or the other. From possible defects to road design flaws to medical conditions to tire blowouts—common or not, any possible factor is worth attention, even just to rule it out.
It could be that authorities here were motivated to get the victim’s family the clear answers they deserve. But if they instead moved on without ensuring the victim’s family were satisfied with the answers they were getting, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time.
