Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I see that a box truck overturned on a major highway, my first thought is that cargo loading and vehicle stability need to be closely examined. Trucks don’t just tip over for no reason: something caused the driver to lose control. The key question is whether it was due to a preventable mistake.
One possibility is that the truck was improperly loaded. A box truck carrying produce means the cargo was likely stacked, and if it wasn’t secured correctly, it could have shifted suddenly. A sudden weight shift in a moving vehicle — especially one with a high center of gravity — can be enough to cause a rollover, even at moderate speeds. Investigators should look at how the truck was loaded, whether it exceeded weight limits and if the driver had any warning signs of an unstable load before the crash.
Another factor to consider is driver behavior. Was the truck traveling too fast for conditions? Did the driver take a turn too sharply? Speed and sudden maneuvers are major contributors to rollovers, especially in top-heavy trucks. Reviewing black box data and dashcam footage can help determine if driver actions played a role.
Finally, was there a mechanical issue? If the truck had faulty brakes, suspension problems or underinflated tires, those could all contribute to a loss of control. A proper investigation should include an inspection of the vehicle itself, not just the crash scene.
Right now, we don’t have enough information to say what went wrong. But if investigators only focus on the immediate aftermath without looking into cargo loading, vehicle maintenance and driver behavior, they may miss key details that explain why this crash really happened.
