Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Crashes where a semi-truck crosses the center line and collides with oncoming traffic raise serious concerns about driver control, mechanical issues and whether external factors played a role. In this case, reports indicate that a northbound semi-truck on U.S. Route 131 veered into the opposite lane and struck a pickup towing a trailer, killing the pickup driver. A full investigation should determine whether this was due to driver error, fatigue or another contributing factor.
One of the most pressing questions investigators should answer is why the semi-truck crossed the center line. Did the driver become distracted or fatigued? Was the truck improperly maintained, leading to a mechanical failure such as a blown tire or steering issue? Reviewing black box data and dashcam footage will be critical in understanding what led to the loss of control.
Another key factor is whether road conditions contributed to the crash. Was the roadway slick, uneven or poorly marked? U.S. Route 131 is a major highway that can experience heavy traffic and rapidly changing weather conditions, especially in Michigan. Investigators should determine whether environmental factors played a role and if additional safety measures, such as rumble strips or better lane markings, could help prevent similar incidents.
Speed should also be examined. If the truck was traveling too fast for road or traffic conditions, that could have made it more difficult for the driver to correct an unintended lane departure. Investigators should analyze black box data from the truck to determine its speed and braking activity before the crash.
At this stage, there isn’t enough public information to determine exactly what led to this crash. But if authorities focus only on the impact without investigating why the truck left its lane, they risk missing key details. A thorough investigation should take all possible factors into account to ensure a full understanding of what went wrong before this crash.
