Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I hear about a crash between a car and a semi-truck that required a driver to be extricated, my first thought is that the force of impact must have been significant. Many people might assume this is just another case of a passenger vehicle colliding with a much larger truck, but in my experience, crashes like this often involve factors that go beyond a simple mistake by one driver.

One of the first things investigators should determine is how the two vehicles came into contact. Did one vehicle cross into the other’s path? Did the truck stop suddenly, causing the car to rear-end it? Did road conditions — like darkness, rain or fog — play a role in limiting visibility? Without answers to these questions, it’s impossible to say what led to the crash.

Speed is another important factor. Investigators should analyze ECM (black box) data from the truck to determine how fast it was going and whether it braked before the crash. In my experience, passenger vehicle drivers often assume that trucks can slow down quickly, but that’s not the case, especially at highway speeds. If the truck driver had to react suddenly due to traffic or other hazards, that could have contributed to the severity of the crash.

Road design and traffic flow should also be considered. State Route 410 is a busy commuter route, and early morning congestion could have played a role. Was traffic slowing or stopping at the time of the crash? Were there any construction zones or merging lanes that may have forced either driver into a tight spot? These are details that often don’t make the initial reports but can be crucial in determining what really happened.

At this stage, there’s not enough information to assign fault, but that’s exactly why a thorough investigation is needed. Looking beyond the crash scene will be key in understanding how this wreck occurred and whether it could have been prevented.
