How Did This Accident Occur?
I’ve been doing this job for over thirty years. Over that time, I’ve analyzed hundreds of truck accidents; my resulting perspective is fairly unique. As such, there are countless questions that come to mind when I read about accidents like this one. Which vehicle struck the other? Were they traveling in the same direction? If so, was it a sideswipe, or a rear-end collision? Was one vehicle attempting to pass the other? Were they heading in opposite directions on the rural highway? If they were, then which vehicle veered left-of-center? Was road design a factor in the wreck? Were there any environmental factors—such as road or weather conditions—that played a role? If one failed to maintain its lane, then was a mechanical malfunction an underlying cause? Did the company with which the truck is affiliated cut corners on required maintenance? Was the truck driver appropriately vetted and trained? Feel free to leave a comment letting me know if you have questions of your own.
Honestly, I could go on, but I won’t. There are just too many factors that could have been at play to speculate them all. The point that I’m trying to make here is that investigators have a lot to sort though and rule out in order to pinpoint the actual causal factors in this wreck. Hopefully, they are thorough and meticulous enough to unearth any that might not be obvious at the accident scene. If not, then perhaps a third party investigation should be considered. After all, the people who were affected by this wreck—the loved ones of the person(s) who lost their life(s)—deserve to know difficult truths, not just easy assumptions.
