Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a multi-vehicle crash involves an 18-wheeler, a fire, and a vehicle ending up in a canal, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. In my experience handling truck accident cases, wrecks like this rarely occur without multiple contributing factors that need to be examined.

What triggered the initial collision? With three vehicles involved, investigators need to determine which vehicle set off the chain of events. Did the truck rear-end a passenger vehicle? Did a smaller vehicle lose control and veer into the truck’s path? Reviewing dashcam footage, black box data, and witness statements could help clarify how the wreck began.

What caused the fire? Vehicles don’t typically burst into flames unless a significant force, fuel system failure, or design flaw is involved. Investigators need to determine whether the fire was caused by the severity of the impact, a mechanical defect, or improper maintenance. Examining burn patterns, fuel system integrity, and manufacturer recall history could provide insight into whether the fire should have been preventable.

Did the trucking company play a role? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers are properly trained and that their vehicles are in safe operating condition. If this driver was fatigued, improperly trained, or operating a poorly maintained truck, investigators need to uncover those details. Reviewing company policies, safety records, and past violations could provide insight into whether broader issues contributed to the crash.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is finding answers. Even if it takes an independent investigation to gather the right evidence, it’s critical to examine every factor to ensure those affected by the crash get the clarity they deserve.
