Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this happen, people often think they’re just a result of simple driver error. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks usually have more complex causes that require a thorough investigation.
In this incident, the truck’s failure to maintain its lane and ultimately veering off an overpass raises important questions. Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or dealing with a mechanical issue? It’s essential to determine what led to the 18-wheeler going off course, especially since the consequences of such an error can be catastrophic.
Truck maintenance is a critical aspect of safety that cannot be overlooked, especially when it comes to large commercial vehicles like 18-wheelers. Proper maintenance ensures that all components of the truck—from the brakes and tires to the engine and steering—are functioning correctly and are less likely to fail at a crucial moment. Inadequate maintenance can lead to mechanical failures, such as brake malfunctions or tire blowouts, which can have catastrophic consequences on the road. Regular inspections and prompt repairs are essential in preventing accidents like this one, where a failure to maintain the vehicle might have played a role in the crash.
If the truck involved was operated by a commercial trucking company, it’s worth considering whether the company itself might share some responsibility. Companies are obligated to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, their drivers are well-trained, and their operations are conducted safely. If any of these areas were neglected, it could have contributed to the events leading up to this crash.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
