Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When accidents like this happen, it’s easy for people to assume they’re caused by a brief lapse in attention or a momentary error. However, based on my experience, crashes involving large trucks often involve multiple factors that require thorough investigation. This incident on Farm to Market 32 is no exception.

While the exact cause of the truck veering into oncoming traffic is still unknown, this raises important questions that go beyond the crash itself. Was the truck driver distracted, fatigued, or dealing with a mechanical issue? Large trucks demand precise handling, and any failure—whether human error or a mechanical malfunction—can lead to serious, sometimes life-threatening consequences, as we see in this case. The fact that the truck overturned on top of the Nissan Altima also points to potential issues with load management, which can affect a truck’s stability in emergency situations.

If the truck was operating under a commercial company, it’s also essential to investigate whether the trucking company involved played a role. Companies are responsible for ensuring their trucks are properly maintained and their drivers are trained to safely handle these vehicles under all conditions. If poor maintenance or insufficient training contributed to the truck crossing into the wrong lane, the company could share responsibility for the wreck. Investigators will need to examine the vehicle’s maintenance records, the driver’s training, and whether company policies placed unnecessary pressure on the driver to rush or take unsafe risks.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain vital evidence, it is crucial to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the crash receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
