Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

In my experience, when two commercial vehicles collide—especially at a major intersection—the investigation has to go much deeper than just who had the right-of-way. Crashes involving box trucks and 18-wheelers aren’t just bigger versions of regular car wrecks; they bring additional layers of risk, both because of the size and weight of the vehicles involved and, in cases like this, because of what the vehicles are carrying.

The fact that the box truck was hauling pesticide raises immediate concerns about hazardous material protocols. Trucks carrying chemicals are subject to stricter rules regarding vehicle condition, driver qualifications, and route planning because the potential for harm extends beyond just the people in the vehicles. Even a minor spill could have health or environmental consequences that need to be managed quickly and carefully.

From a legal standpoint, the conduct of both drivers—and the companies behind them—needs careful scrutiny. Were they operating at appropriate speeds for a controlled intersection? Were the vehicles properly maintained, particularly the braking and steering systems that are critical to avoiding collisions? And were the drivers adequately trained to handle emergency maneuvers, especially when transporting potentially dangerous cargo?

From where I sit, a collision between two commercial trucks at an intersection isn’t just about property damage and injury—it’s a warning sign that something in the system of training, oversight, or vehicle maintenance may have failed. Only a thorough investigation into both vehicles, both drivers, and the companies responsible for putting them on the road will provide the answers needed to ensure accountability and offer those affected by the wreck the clarity and closure they deserve.
