El Paso, TX — December 14, 2024, a state trooper was injured in a truck accident at approximately 11:30 p.m. along Interstate Highway 10.
According to authorities, a westbound 18-wheeler hauling a lowboy trailer was attempting a U-turn at a crossover in the median of I.H. 10 in the vicinity north of Mesa Drive when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler was unable to safely complete the maneuver before its trailer (which had been blocking the westbound lanes of the highway) was struck by a westbound Texas DPS trooper.
Reports state that the trooper suffered injuries of unknown severity as a result of the collision and was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this one occur, people might be inclined to focus on the immediate details—like the U-turn maneuver and the resulting collision—but in my experience, the causes of such incidents often run deeper than they initially appear. With over 30 years of handling commercial vehicle accident cases, I’ve seen how decisions made far in advance of a crash can contribute to its occurrence.
Why was the 18-wheeler attempting such a high-risk maneuver on an interstate highway at night? Did the driver misjudge the time and space needed to safely complete the U-turn? Was the maneuver conducted improperly, or was there confusion about whether it was even permitted in the first place? Investigators must also consider whether poor visibility, fatigue, or distraction could have played a role in the truck driver’s actions.
The trucking company’s role in this incident also demands scrutiny. Companies have a duty to ensure their drivers are adequately trained to handle situations like this safely. Did the company provide clear guidance to its drivers about using crossovers in the median of an interstate, particularly with such a large trailer in tow? Moreover, was the truck in proper working condition, or could mechanical issues have contributed to the failed maneuver? These factors could help determine whether the company bears some responsibility for what happened.
Collisions involving emergency responders like the state trooper highlight the inherent risks they face while working to ensure public safety. It’s essential to explore whether anything could have been done to prevent or minimize the dangers posed by the truck’s maneuver. Was there adequate lighting or signage to warn approaching traffic? Were highway design and policy factors contributing to the collision? Answering these questions can help determine how to reduce the risks to first responders and others on the road.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
