Holt County, MO — January 4, 2025, a pedestrian was killed in a runaway truck accident shortly before 12:45 p.m. along Interstate Highway 29.
According to authorities, a 33-year-old man was on foot on the shoulder of I.H. 29 in the vicinity of State Highway 118 when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that a Peterbilt 18-wheeler was at a stop, parked in the shoulder on the east side of the interstate when, for as yet unknown reasons, it began rolling downhill, striking the pedestrian in the process. The truck continued rolling downhill until coming to a stop after crashing into a light pole.
The victim suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was declared deceased at the scene. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this occur, they often leave people searching for straightforward explanations—such as mechanical failure or driver error. However, in my experience, cases involving runaway vehicles like this one rarely have simple answers. A thorough investigation is essential to uncover how and why the truck rolled away, leading to such a fatal outcome.
The reports raise critical questions about what caused the parked 18-wheeler to begin rolling. Was the truck improperly parked, with its parking brake not engaged or malfunctioning? Did a mechanical issue within the braking system contribute to the truck’s inability to stay stationary? Alternatively, was the truck left in a position or condition that made it susceptible to rolling, such as being parked on an incline without sufficient precautions in place? Determining what went wrong will be key to understanding why the pedestrian lost their life.
The trucking company that owns or operates the vehicle must also come under scrutiny. Companies are responsible for ensuring that their vehicles are properly maintained and that drivers are trained to secure trucks safely when parked. Were the truck’s systems inspected regularly to confirm they were in proper working condition? Did the driver follow proper procedures when parking the vehicle? These questions are central to determining whether the company upheld its responsibilities or allowed preventable risks to develop.
Beyond the company’s potential role, the condition of the truck itself is a critical piece of the puzzle. Were the parking brake and other safety systems fully functional, or had wear and tear rendered them ineffective? Were any modifications or repairs to the vehicle made that may have compromised its ability to stay parked? These details could shed light on whether the truck was in a safe and roadworthy state at the time of the accident.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
