Maury County, TN — December 4, 2024, Tia Blankenship was killed following a truck accident shortly after 3:45 p.m. along Hampshire Pike.

According to authorities, 23-year-old Tia Blankenship was traveling in a passenger vehicle on Hampshire Pike in the vicinity of McKinnon Lane when the accident took place.

Traffic conditions in the area at the time were reportedly slow. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler with a trailer in tow became jackknifed as it braked for the traffic. Due to this jackknife situation, the westbound lanes of the road became blocked. Following that, the 18-wheeler was struck by the vehicle occupied by Blankenship. She suffered fatal injuries as a result of the wreck and was declared deceased at the scene. No other injuries have been reported. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When crashes like this occur, people often assume they result from unavoidable circumstances, like traffic congestion or poor road conditions. However, in my experience, accidents involving jackknifed trucks and fatal collisions often require deeper scrutiny to uncover all contributing factors.

What caused the 18-wheeler to jackknife while braking for slow-moving traffic? Was the truck driver operating at a safe speed and maintaining a proper following distance to account for the congestion ahead? Could the truck’s brakes or other mechanical systems have malfunctioned, making it impossible to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop? These are critical questions that must be investigated to understand how the crash unfolded.

The trucking company’s role in this incident must also be examined. Companies have a duty to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and their drivers are adequately trained to respond to dynamic traffic situations. Was the truck inspected regularly to confirm that its braking system and tires were in optimal condition? Additionally, was the driver sufficiently trained to avoid a jackknife scenario, which is often preventable with proper handling techniques? If operational pressures, such as tight schedules, led to risky driving practices, the company may share responsibility for the outcome.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
