Steven Varghese Injured in Single-car Accident in Missouri City, TX

Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Infiniti failed to safely maintain its lane of travel; it was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a tree. Varghese reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a car leaves the roadway and collides with a fixed object, the explanation is often left at “failed to maintain lane.” But with serious injuries involved, that description doesn’t tell us why the vehicle veered off course in the first place.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A single-car collision at 1:30 a.m. should prompt close examination of the roadway evidence. Did investigators measure skid marks, document steering corrections, or estimate the Infiniti’s speed before impact? Was there any indication the driver attempted to brake or avoid something in the road? Without those details, the report risks being too simplistic, offering little clarity on what really caused the wreck.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A sudden failure in brakes, steering, or suspension can cause a driver to lose control instantly. Tire blowouts, too, can push a vehicle off its path and into a tree with little chance for recovery. Modern cars also rely on electronic stability systems designed to prevent lane departures, but those systems can malfunction. Unless the Infiniti is carefully inspected, it’s impossible to rule out whether mechanical issues played a role.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Most newer Infiniti models are equipped with event data recorders that log speed, throttle, braking, and steering inputs seconds before impact. That data could confirm whether the driver tried to correct or if the car failed to respond. Phone records and GPS data may also show if distraction or sudden movement played a role. And given the residential setting, nearby security cameras may have captured the incident. Without these tools, the true cause remains uncertain.

When someone is seriously hurt in a single-vehicle crash, the easy explanation of “lane departure” doesn’t provide real answers. Only by piecing together the scene evidence, inspecting the vehicle, and reviewing the data can investigators understand what really happened.

Key Takeaways:

  • Single-car crashes require careful reconstruction of speed, braking, and steering inputs.
  • Tire, brake, or stability system failures could explain why the Infiniti left its lane.
  • Black box data, phone records, and cameras are crucial for uncovering the full story.
