Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I see that a semi-truck hit a turning vehicle, my first thought is that investigators need to take a close look at right-of-way and driver decision-making. The key question in a case like this is whether the truck driver had enough time and space to react or if the turning vehicle was already in the roadway when the truck approached.
One possibility is that the driver of the Dodge Ram misjudged the truck’s speed and tried to make the turn before clearing its path. That happens more often than people realize because the size of a semi-truck can make it appear to be moving slower than it actually is. However, that doesn’t automatically mean the truck driver wasn’t also responsible.
Investigators should determine whether the truck driver was speeding or following too closely to react safely. Trucks take much longer to stop than passenger vehicles, so maintaining a safe following distance is critical. If the driver wasn’t paying attention or didn’t adjust their speed for traffic conditions, that could have played a role in the crash. Reviewing black box data, dashcam footage and witness statements will be key to understanding what happened in the moments before impact.
At this point, we don’t know exactly why this wreck happened. But if authorities don’t examine all possible factors they may not get the full picture of what led to this fatal collision.
