Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When incidents like this one occur, people often assume they stem from simple driver error. However, in my 30 years of experience handling commercial vehicle accident cases, I’ve found that accidents involving 18-wheelers are rarely the result of a single factor. To fully understand what went wrong, it’s essential to dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
What could have caused the truck to veer off the highway? Was the driver impaired, distracted, or possibly experiencing a medical emergency? Could fatigue have played a role, as commercial drivers are often under intense pressure to meet tight schedules? Alternatively, was there a mechanical issue like brake failure or steering problems that made it impossible to maintain control? Each of these possibilities needs to be carefully explored.
The condition of the truck and the practices of the company responsible for it must also be examined. Federal regulations require regular inspections and maintenance to ensure commercial vehicles are roadworthy, but not all trucking companies prioritize compliance. Was this truck properly maintained and inspected, or could deferred maintenance or neglected repairs have led to this outcome? If company practices contributed to the accident, those failures need to be brought to light.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
