Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Beetle failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left, crossing over the oncoming lane of traffic and leaving the opposite side of the roadway. There, it reportedly overturned, rolling an unknown number of times before coming to a stop resting on its roof.

The person who had been behind the wheel of the vehicle and the backseat passenger allegedly left the scene. Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash leaves someone seriously hurt and the driver and another occupant leave the scene, as appears to have happened in this single-vehicle rollover on F.M. 724, it’s tempting to focus only on the hit-and-run aspect. But after decades of handling serious injury and fatality cases, I’ve learned that focusing on just one issue often leaves the most important questions unanswered. A wreck like this calls for a broader, more deliberate investigation.

To start, did law enforcement conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the crash? For instance, why did the vehicle veer across the road and overturn? Was the driver under the influence, distracted, or speeding? Did the scene suggest evasive action, mechanical failure, or contact with another vehicle? And perhaps most importantly, did authorities identify and follow up on the individuals who fled? Their accounts could be critical to understanding what happened and who was behind the wheel.

Equally important, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the crash? Single-vehicle rollovers can result from tire blowouts, steering failures, or suspension issues, especially in smaller vehicles like a Volkswagen Beetle. If a defect played a role and isn’t identified early, key evidence could be lost or overlooked entirely.

Another critical question: was the vehicle’s electronic data recorder secured? These systems often capture the final seconds before a crash—recording speed, steering, braking, and even seat belt usage. If the data is retrieved promptly, it could establish exactly how the vehicle behaved and who may have been driving.

Answering these three questions is critical to making sure that no stone is left unturned in understanding the causes of a crash like this. Serious wrecks deserve serious investigation, not assumptions. Getting clear answers to these questions is crucial for those seeking to understand what happened and why—and it’s the least that can be done to help those affected find the clarity and closure they deserve.
