People often think that after crashes like this, authorities have a crack CSI team that secures the scene, uses state-of-the-art tools to gather evidence, and comes to a definitive conclusion about what led to the crash. In reality, even a complex multi-vehicle crash like this often ends up in the hands of a single officer who doesn’t have access to the time or tools they need to really dig into a complex crash reconstruction. That’s why so many families—and even many police departments—bring in independent investigators who can pick up the slack. They can help ensure that even unlikely possible factors get attention, even if it’s just to rule something out. Once that happens here, hopefully there can be a clear path forward for the victims and families involved.
