Harlingen, TX — April 26, 2023, San Juana Benavides Sanchez was fatally injured in a pedestrian accident at around noon on Ed Carey Drive.
Details in local news outlets say that the fatal incident occurred outside of the Valley Baptist Medical Center, just off the Ed Carey and S. 77 Sunshine Strip intersection.
According to initial details, 73-year-old San Juana Benavides Sanchez was walking outside of the hospital. Benavides Sanchez was attempting to cross Ed Carey, officials say, when it appears that a pickup was making a turn from Pease Street onto Ed Carey. The pickup then hit Benavides Sanchez.
Due to the collision, Benavides Sanchez sustained injuries which ultimately proved fatal. The driver of the pickup was not publicly identified by officials, and police say the driver cooperated with their investigations. There are no report charges or citations pending at this time. The incident remains under investigation.
