Officials indicate that, for unknown reasons, a cement truck traveling along the highway failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left of center, entering the opposite lane of traffic. This resulted in a collision with an oncoming school bus occupied by 44 children and 11 adults. The collision apparently caused the school bus to overturn. A third vehicle, a Dodge Charger, was also involved in the accident.

Reports state that the driver of the Charger and one young boy who had been on the school bus incurred fatal injuries as a result of the accident. Of those injured in the accident, four victims were flown to area medical facilities for immediate treatment, six were driven by ambulance with suspected serious injuries, and a further ten were transported for treatment of minor injuries.
