Accident Report
February 13, 2026, Robert Gonzales and Amelia Gonzales were injured after a car accident at around 11:15 p.m. along Highway 359.
Authorities said that the crash happened just west of Sandia, a few miles south of Mathis. It appears that Robert Gonzales and Amelia Gonzales were in a Volkswagen Passat traveling northbound along the highway. A Toyota Tundra was going southbound when it reportedly left its lane. As a result, the vehicles collided.
Both Robert Gonzales and Amelia Gonzales reportedly had serious injuries due to the collision. Authorities accused the other driver of being under the influence of alcohol at the time. They recommended multiple chargers, including intoxication assault.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities seem pretty certain they have a wrongdoer here, and they seem to have taken steps toward seeing that driver held accountable. But does responsibility for this accident rest solely on the alleged drunk driver’s shoulders? Texas law says it might not. That depends on where the driver got the alcohol. Let me explain.
This late at night on a Friday, it’s very common that a drunk driver would be coming from a bar or other local establishment. If investigations show that establishment recklessly over-served that driver, the establishment broke the law. It’s unlawful in Texas for bars and other alcohol providers to serve people who are obviously intoxicated. Doing so can expose them to potential criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and responsibility for resulting accidents.
Too often, though, this slips through the cracks. Authorities will often put all of their focus on one person once that person has charges to face. Meanwhile, there could be a bar that helped send two people to the hospital continuing business as usual and putting the community in danger. Is it okay that they get to ride off into the sunset, or should they, too, face appropriate consequences for breaking the law and contributing to a serious accident? That’s why I have to wonder if authorities have considered the whole story here.
