An investigation is underway following car accident that left one person dead and injured another during the Sunday February 2nd. According to official reports, a GMC Envoy operated by Richard Kerron was traveling on the southbound lanes of Haley Rd. and had entered the intersection with Highway 26 when for unknown reasons the GMC drove in front of a Toyota Camry resulting in a collision. The impact caused the GMC to roll and collided with a Toyota Solara.

When first responders arrived they found that Kerron had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the passenger of the GMC was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. No-one from the Solara or Camry were reportedly injured, and this remains an open investigation and more details may be released in the future.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Whenever I read about a crash like this, my immediate concern is whether investigators will uncover the full picture of what happened. While the initial reports describe the GMC Envoy entering the intersection and colliding with another vehicle, the key question remains: why did this happen? Determining the cause requires a thorough investigation, which is why it’s essential to ask three critical questions.

The first question is whether authorities conducted a comprehensive investigation. Law enforcement will likely document the scene, review traffic signals, take witness statements, and possibly check for nearby surveillance footage. However, a full investigation must go deeper. Was there a visibility issue at the intersection? Were all traffic control devices functioning correctly? Did investigators consider whether the driver of the GMC attempted to avoid something in the roadway or if another external factor contributed to the collision? Understanding the exact sequence of events leading to the crash is crucial.

The second question is whether a vehicle defect could have played a role. Mechanical failures are often overlooked in multi-vehicle crashes, but they shouldn’t be ruled out without a proper forensic examination. Did the GMC Envoy experience a braking or steering issue that caused it to enter the intersection unexpectedly? Did an acceleration problem prevent the driver from stopping in time? Additionally, given that the vehicle rolled over, it’s important to assess whether a structural defect in the vehicle’s design contributed to the severity of the crash. Examining these factors before the vehicle is disposed of is critical, as once it’s gone, so is the opportunity to determine if a mechanical failure played a role.

Lastly, has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected? Modern vehicles store crucial information in their electronic control modules (ECMs), sometimes referred to as “black boxes.” These devices can provide key details such as speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to the crash. Additionally, nearby traffic cameras, dashcams, and even cell phone data could provide further insight into what happened. If this evidence isn’t secured quickly, it may be lost, making it much harder to determine the full scope of what led to the crash.

When a serious crash occurs, those affected deserve complete and thorough answers—not assumptions or incomplete explanations. While initial reports provide basic details, a full investigation must explore all possible contributing factors, including road conditions, mechanical failures, and electronic evidence. Ensuring that every piece of evidence is properly examined isn’t just about understanding this crash—it’s about identifying potential safety concerns and preventing future incidents.
