Burleson, TX — August 27, 2024, Rafael Rios Cortez was killed as the result of a car accident at around 1:00 p.m. along F.M. 917.
According to officials, the incident took place in a construction zone along the 1600 block of F.M. 917, just east of Chisholm Trail.

Investigators said that 76-year-old Rafael Rios Cortez was working as a flagger in a construction zone at the time. While doing so, it appears a vehicle somehow struck Rios Cortez. As a result, Rios Cortez was killed. Right now, it’s unclear if authorities considered charges for the driver. Additional details are unavailable.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It’s obviously important to understand what the driver here was doing that led to them hitting someone whose job is to be as visible for drivers as possible. But on top of that, any work accident is going to bring up unique challenges for the victims and families involved. It would require investigations into the layout of the construction site, the equipment the victim had access to, safety practices and supervision, and whether or not there were conditions that made an accident like this more likely. My concern is just that an outside party being involved in the accident could distract officials from really getting this worker’s loved ones the full story they deserve.
