One thing to consider with a multi-vehicle crash like this is that it’s going to result in a very chaotic accident scene. This can raise concerns about how the investigations are being handled. I get calls a lot from folks worried that authorities may not be giving an accident the attention it deserves. To find out, it can be helpful to answer some key questions.
One critical question to ask is whether investigators had the time and resources to fully document the scene. With so much happening at once, it’s easy for key evidence—like vehicle positions, impact points, or witness statements—to get missed if officers are ill-equipped or rushed to move on to other jobs too quickly.
It’s also important to ask whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the accident. Mechanical failures—such as brake or steering issues—can set off a chain reaction. Issues with airbags and seatbelts can also make injuries more severe than they otherwise would have been. These problems often go unnoticed without a focused inspection.
Finally, was electronic crash data from the involved vehicles preserved? Pre-crash information like speed, braking, and steering input can be vital to understanding how the crash unfolded. Cell phone records and video footage from dash cams or nearby businesses can also be vital to secure quickly. This is best done promptly, as the data can be overwritten or deleted.
If authorities can provide clear answers to these questions, it’s likely because they’re conducting thorough investigations. But if it seems they’re not able to address a family’s concerns, then that may be a sign that the incident needs independent investigations to help ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
