If the allegations here prove to be true, folks generally think it’s as simple as charging the driver and that’s that. While that is often how things go, there can be accomplices to these accidents who also need to be called out: alcohol providers.

Simply put, a lot of alcohol-related accidents involve a driver who was unlawfully over-served by an alcohol provider, such as a bar or restaurants. Those providers can be subject to criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and liability for the resulting injuries. However, this isn’t the sort of thing authorities tend to prioritize. I’ve had hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers. Few of them faced consequences thanks to the authorities. Consequences usually come from the alternative legal avenues that victims and families discover once they realize authorities are only getting them part of the larger story. It remains to be seen, though, if those steps would be necessary here.
