Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I often contend with the assumption that an accident like this is easy to explain. People tend to think someone on foot in the road was to blame more or less by default, but almost no crash is that simple. Before anyone jumps to conclusions there are plenty of details and context to learn about this incident to be sure it’s understood. Questions about lighting and visibility, the car’s speed, if the driver’s full attention was on the road, where both people came from, where exactly the victim was in the road, how long he had been there, and many other data points still need to be addressed.
If that seems like a handful, that’s because it is—and it’s all important. Someone was seriously hurt here, and whether the explanation for that is simple or complicated he still deserves to know the whole story. I just hope Dallas authorities agree.
