Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People generally see situations like this as open-and-shut. Authorities blame someone for the crash, and they recommend charges. That’s that, right? Well, a lot of families learn that the evidence they need for a full resolution and the evidence authorities preserve to file charges don’t always overlap one-to-one.
A lot of the time, families need a lot more evidence than what a typical police investigation covers. If they simply wait around and rely solely on authorities, then, they can find themselves empty-handed at a time when the evidence they actually need has deteriorated or been lost.
That’s why it’s often prudent to have independent investigators look into a crash as soon as possible. Having as much evidence tell the story is possible is usually the best way to ensure the victim’s side of the story is told in full.
