Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
A serious crash like this can create significant challenges if investigators aren’t prepared to handle them. It can surprise people when that happens, but I learned a long time ago that authorities often treat accident reconstruction as a low priority. As a result, officers may not have the training, tools, or time to really dig into the evidence.
That’s why crashes like this often fare better with two sets of eyes on them. Having independent investigators step in can help ensure that nothing important slips through the cracks. If it turns out authorities were already being thorough, that can still reassure victims and families their side of the story is being told fairly. But if it turns out there are shortcomings in the official investigations, steps can be taken to pick up the slack.
