Austin, TX — September 6, 2023, Merced Elizalde Cortez Jr. was killed following a single-vehicle accident at around 6:22 a.m. along Interstate 35.
According to initial details about the accident released by authorities, the crash occurred on the northbound service road off the corner of East 4th Street.
It appears that 24-year-old Merced Elizalde Cortez Jr. was the driver of a Chevy Silverado pickup going northbound on the service road. Somehow, the pickup went straight along the turnaround lane, crashing into a guardrail. The vehicle also hit boulders off the roadway before coming to a stop along the nearby railroad tracks.
Due to the collision, Elizalde Cortez Jr. sustained fatal injuries. Authorities did not report any other vehicles being involved in the crash. Currently, factors surrounding the accident cannot be confirmed without additional details.
