El Paso, TX — April 27, 2025, Melissa Guzman and Monica Sanchez were injured following a car accident at around 10:50 p.m. on U.S. 54.
According to initial details about the accident, it took place off the corner of Gateway North Boulevard and Sean Haggerty Drive.
Investigators said that 36-year-old Melissa Guzman was in a Ford Focus going southwest along the freeway. 49-year-old Monica Sanchez was in a Nissan Sentra going the same direction. It appears one or both of their vehicles were slowing down when a Ford F-250 pickup reportedly crashed with both of the other vehicles.
Due to the collision, Melissa Guzman reportedly had serious injuries. Officials say that Monica Sanchez had minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. Authorities allege the pickup driver had been drinking, but they did not release additional details.

Authorities didn’t specify if they believe alcohol is the cause of this accident. It’s important to distinguish if the driver was actually intoxicated and where they got the alcohol from. That’s because in Texas, negligent alcohol providers can also be responsible for contributing to accidents if they unlawfully over-served the driver responsible.
I’ve handled hundreds of alcohol-related accident cases, though, and authorities don’t always bother investigating such accidents beyond the accident scene. It’s important the victims and families involved in these situations know they’re getting the whole story, so hopefully authorities here have been more thorough than normal.
