Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Little as I like saying this, single-vehicle accidents like the one above are sometimes quickly written off by the public and even authorities. The common opinion expressed is that if a vehicle crashes the driver must have done something wrong, but operator errors are far from the only explanation. Many other factors might contribute to, or even outright cause, an accident like the one in Burleson County.

With that in mind, investigators there really have their work cut out for them. What were road and weather conditions like that night? Are there streetlights in the area? What’s visibility like at night? Was the Jeep in good repair? Could something have blown a tire on the vehicle? Does that model/year have known defects? Did the driver have any medical conditions that might have incapacitated her? Where was she before she drove that night?

My goal isn’t to overcomplicate this or any other incident by talking about these concerns. I’m only pointing out that many crashes are already complicated, but their complexities often go unrecognized during a “by the book” investigation. Since the victim sadly can’t tell her side of the story, it falls to others to make sure her loved ones get the truth. I hope authorities will deliver that before all is said and done.
