Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With a single-vehicle wreck like this, there’s always a concern about how authorities went about putting a story together. Simply put, if someone is flown from an accident scene, they aren’t usually in a position to give a coherent statement to investigators. That usually means authorities need to follow up with victims later on to get their side of the story.

But with a single-vehicle wreck, things can become more complex. Since unavoidable possible factors like mechanical issues, road hazards, and defective tires (to name a few examples) are unlikely, they tend to go overlooked. This can lead to authorities blaming a driver, assuming they did something wrong when they didn’t. I don’t have reason to believe that’s happening with this crash, but I also don’t yet see any reason to believe these preliminary statements are telling the whole story.
