Truck Driver Killed in Landfill Accident in Fairfield, UT

It appears two trucks were side by side dumping off cargo at the landfill. One reportedly had its bed raised when it “hit a soft spot,” causing the bed to tip over. It landed on the other truck’s cabin, killing that driver. No one else was hurt.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Obviously there isn’t a confirmed cause for the accident, but I find these unusual accidents sometimes get written off as “unavoidable tragedies.” In reality, there was usually a way to avoid what happened. Was the truck driver moving reckless, leading to the bed tipping over? Does the landfill not have good safety procedures to space drivers apart? Did a defect cause the bed to tip over? Was a lack of experience or poor training involved in the incident? At the end of the day, drivers all over the country go to and from landfills every day, and this sort of thing doesn’t happen. The victim’s loved ones deserve to know what was different here.
