Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Crashes involving passenger vehicles and buses often raise questions about visibility, right-of-way, and whether either driver had enough time to react. In this case, reports indicate that a Nissan Rogue and a charter bus collided on eastbound I-244, resulting in the death of the Nissan’s driver. However, without more details, it’s unclear what led to the crash or how it unfolded. A proper investigation should examine all possible contributing factors.
One of the first questions investigators should answer is how the collision occurred. Did the Nissan strike the bus, or did the bus hit the Nissan? Was either vehicle changing lanes, merging or slowing down at the time? Reviewing black box data from both vehicles, along with any available dashcam or traffic camera footage, will be key to understanding the sequence of events.
Another important factor is visibility and road conditions. Was the crash caused by limited sight lines, weather-related visibility issues or heavy traffic congestion? Highways can be particularly dangerous when multiple large vehicles are in close proximity, and even a small miscalculation in speed or spacing can lead to a serious crash.
The size difference between a bus and a passenger vehicle is another consideration. Large buses have significant blind spots and require longer stopping distances, which means a sudden lane change or braking maneuver by either driver could have contributed to the crash. If the bus driver didn’t see the Nissan in time or if the Nissan’s driver misjudged the bus’s speed and position, that could help explain what happened.
At this stage, there isn’t enough public information to determine exactly what led to this crash. But if authorities only focus on who hit whom without asking why the crash happened — whether due to visibility issues, road conditions or driver misjudgment — they risk missing key details. A thorough investigation should take all contributing factors into account to ensure a complete understanding of the wreck.
