Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the most important steps one can take after a single-vehicle wreck is to make sure the investigations are being taken seriously. I can’t count how many times families have come to me about a crash that killed a loved one, and they’re asking the same questions weeks or months later that they were asking on day one. Why is that?

Simply put, authorities do not always prioritize investigating accidents like this. It takes a lot of careful inspection of vehicles, the roadway, electronic evidence, and other often time-sensitive evidence to get the complete picture. If an officer lacks access to proper tools, or if they’re rushed to move on to other work too quickly, they could overlook something important.

Ultimately, that’s why it’s helpful to follow up with authorities early and often. If they can address a family’s concerns and assure them the victim’s side of the story will be told fairly, that’s a good sign they’re taking the investigations seriously. But anytime their responses fall short or leave doubts, that may be a sign the crash needs another look from independent investigators.
